The Seed of the Sacred Fig
Iran, 2024
Director: Mohammad Rasoulof
At home, Iman is a patriarch in every sense of the word – a strict husband and father. Outside, he serves as an investigating judge at the Revolutionary Court in Tehran. After receiving a recent promotion, his wife and two daughters are given clear instructions about how they are expected to behave in light of his new and important position.
But the wave of political protests spreading through the streets of Tehran soon reaches the walls of Iman’s home. When his gun suddenly disappears, he takes drastic measures that only deepen the growing tension within the family, pushing everyone to the edge and beyond.
The latest film by acclaimed Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof received the Special Jury Prize and the International Critics Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, along with one of the most enthusiastic audience responses of the event. Rasoulof fled Iran dramatically after being sentenced to eight years in prison and flogging, and managed to arrive in Cannes at the last moment to receive the awards for his film – a powerful and gripping social political drama that boldly criticizes the Iranian regime and stands firmly with the women’s protest movement.
