Premiere of an Original Production

Thursday, June 19th | 20:00 | Amphi Ashdod

The Gipsy Kings started out as Los Reyes – a play on the surname of the founding members, who are of Romani descent from Spain. The Reyes family (in Spanish: kings) fled Catalonia, Spain, during the 1930s, amid the Spanish Civil War. When they arrived in France, the Reyes family continued to play flamenco and rumba music, and in the 1960s, they formed the band Los Reyes. The band’s big break came in the 1980s when they performed at the birthday party of the famous actress Brigitte Bardot, at which point they changed their name to Gipsy Kings.

Since then, the band has won numerous Grammy Awards, and many of their songs have become international hits, such as their cover of the iconic Hotel California, which was also featured on the soundtrack of the film The Big Lebowski, as well as songs like Bamboleo, Volare, Djobi Djoba, and many others.

In this special performance, the world music icon Ishtar will join them as a guest. She is currently on an international tour with the Gipsy Kings, performing songs from her album Alabina that’s celebrating its 30th anniversary and has accumulated over half a billion listens worldwide.
