Blaga’s Lesson

Tuesday, June 17 | 19:00, Hall 6

The filmmakers from Bulgaria will join for a conversation about the film

Director: Stephan Komandarev | Bulgaria, 2023 | Feature | 114 minutes

Blaga, a seventy-year-old retired teacher, has just lost her husband. She’s an old-fashioned woman with strong principles, deep knowledge, and quiet sensitivity – qualities that the modern world doesn’t always value. One day, Blaga becomes the victim of a phone scam and loses all her savings. She has no money to bury her husband as she wanted, and there’s no way to get the money back. With no money left to give her husband the burial she envisioned, and no way to recover the stolen funds, she finds herself on the brink of despair, until a tempting and suspicious offer comes her way.

A tense drama about social injustice, and Bulgaria’s official submission to the Oscars.
