A Simple Story

A new stage adaptation of the novel by Shmuel Yosef Agnon

Adaptation and Direction: Yotam Gottleib

Hirschl Hurwitz, the son of a well to do family, falls in love with Bluma Nacht, a poor orphan who works in his family’s home. His mother strongly opposes the relationship and pressures him to marry Mina, the daughter of a respectable and established family. As life continues along the path expected of him, Hirschl finds himself unable to let go of his first love. The emotions he keeps hidden gradually push him toward a personal crisis that shakes both his life and those around him.

A Simple Story, one of the most beloved and iconic works by Nobel Prize laureate S. Y. Agnon, blends poetic language, gentle humor and deep human insight. With sensitivity and subtlety, the story reveals the tension between the desires of the heart and the expectations imposed by society.

Now, for the first time, the novel is brought to the stage of the Jerusalem Khan Theatre in a vibrant new adaptation marking ninety years since the publication of the book’s first edition.

The production offers a moving and human perspective on love, choice and lives that are sometimes shaped by others, bringing a classic work of Israeli literature back to the stage in a rich and emotional theatrical experience.
